Working Together for Children

By Jody Williams
1     Over 100 years ago, two women wanted to make a difference. It was a time when women did not have the same rights as men. Women could not vote. In some places, girls were not allowed to go to school. Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst wanted to help children. They wanted to help parents. They wanted to help teachers.

2     Alice and Phoebe wanted to make life better for children. They wanted them to be healthy. They wanted children to be safe. They wanted children to get an education. On February 17, 1897, the National PTA was founded. PTA stands for Parent Teacher Association. Alice and Phoebe wanted teachers and parents to work together.

3     Alice and Phoebe asked mothers to be a part of the group. They thought that mothers were closer with their children. The group was first called the National Congress for Mothers. In 1897, over 2,000 people joined. Fathers and mothers joined. Teachers joined. Workers joined. People who ran the government joined. The name was changed to Parent Teacher Association.
