Yay for Moms!
By Jody Williams
1 A group of children were asked, "What is a mom?" They had a lot of ideas. She is a girl. She takes care of everyone. She makes me feel better when I am sick. She always likes my jokes. She works hard. She has eyes in the back of her head. She is amazing. She loves me no matter what.
2 Moms have been celebrated for many years. People in ancient Greece worshiped mothers. Some religions celebrate mothers. In 1868, Ann Jarvis created "Mothers' Day Work Clubs." The towns around where she lived were poor. They were not clean. She wanted mothers to come together. The mothers made people aware of what was wrong. They came together to help.
3 In 1905, Ann Jarvis died. Her daughter took over. Her daughter's name was Anna Jarvis. She asked businessmen for help. She asked the president for help. Anna wanted a special day for mothers.
