How Sweet It Is

By Jody Williams
1     I taste sweet. I am an ingredient in candy. I can be added to food or drinks. People buy me in the store. Some people stay away from me if they want to lose weight. Others can not get enough of me. What am I? I am sugar.

2     Have you ever wondered where sugar comes from? Some people think it comes from the grocery store. Where was it before it was put on the store shelves? Sugar comes from plants. One plant is called sugarcane. Sugarcane grows out of the ground. It grows in stalks. The stalks can grow to be six to twenty feet tall.

3     Sugarcane is grown in tropical places. The tropics are usually hot and humid. Sugarcane was first discovered in Southeast Asia. History says that Christopher Columbus brought it to the Americas. Most of today's sugarcane is grown in Brazil. Brazil is the largest country in South America. Sugarcane is also grown in India and China. It is also grown in the United States. It is grown in Hawaii.
