Flying Disc Fun

By Beth Beutler
1     Have you ever tossed a flying disc back and forth? Chances are that you have. Many people have thrown what is known as a Frisbee at some point in their lives, but they probably don't know how the Frisbee came about. (Technically, the word "Frisbee" is a brand name for a flying plastic disc made by one company. However, it has become synonymous with "flying disc" so many people use the term for any flying disc regardless of the manufacturer.)

2     The Frisbie Baking Company made pies in a bakery not far from Yale University in the later 1800s. College students found that the empty pie tins could be tossed back and forth. The tins had the name of the baking company on the bottom. The tins became known as "Frisbies."

3     Later, a man named Walter Frederick Morrison made a plastic disc to fly. It was sold under the name Flyin-Saucer. In 1955, Morrison came up with a newer design. He marketed it under the name of the Pluto Platter. In 1957 Morrison sold the rights to the toy to the Wham-O toy company.
