The Challenge

By Jody Williams
1     What is a challenge? Usually, it is something that is not easy. Some may think that math is a challenge. Some may think that playing a sport is a challenge. A challenge needs special effort. It is like a test. Can you do it? Are you up for a challenge?

2     Alan B. Shepard loved a challenge. He faced it head on. He is best known as a NASA astronaut. Alan Shepard was born on November 18, 1923. He was born in New Hampshire. As a child he did chores around the farm. He had a newspaper route. He used the money he earned to buy a bicycle.

3     Alan Shepard liked school. His favorite subjects were math and science. He went to school in a one-room schoolhouse. There were twenty-five students. They were in first through sixth grade. There was one teacher.

4     Shepard looked at life as a challenge. He never backed away from one. Shepard graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1944. He was put on a ship in the Pacific Ocean. This was during World War II.
