Lonely Traveler

By Jody Williams
1     What is your story? Many authors get ideas for books from their own experiences. Katherine Paterson spent most of her childhood in foreign countries. Her family was forced to leave for safety reasons. They moved thirteen times while Katherine was growing up. Those experiences helped shape her into an award winning author.

2     Katherine Paterson was born on October 31, 1932. She was born in China. China is a large country in Asia. Katherine's parents were missionaries. A missionary is a person sent to another country. This person usually does religious work. He may be a teacher. He may be a pastor. Katherine's father was the principal of a school. He traveled throughout China.

3     When Katherine was five years old, the family had to leave China. It was not safe for them to be there at that time. They moved to the United States. A few years later, they returned to China. Again, the family had to leave China. They returned again to the United States. Between 1937 and 1950 the family moved thirteen times.
