Wishing for Oatmeal
By Beth Beutler
College was harder than Jessica had anticipated. Oh, she loved it, all right. However, the work and demands were far greater than what she had told herself they would be.
Being away from home was a mixed blessing, as well. On one hand, Jessica liked the freedom of coming and going as she pleased, hanging out with friends, and learning new things. But on the other hand, almost every day she yearned for some comfort from home.
Jessica yawned sleepily. "Oatmeal," she thought. "I miss Mom's oatmeal."
Jessica had awoken to a cold dorm room. It was approaching November, and it seemed like each day was a little colder than the last.
Jessica's roommate jumped up to turn up the thermostat.
"We forgot to turn on the heat last night," she said, jumping back under her quilt. Jessica pulled her comforter up around her neck.
"I guess we won't forget that again," she said.
"You're right about that," her roommate replied, turning back around in bed. Jessica knew Esther would go back to sleep because she didn't have a class for three hours.
