Esther Forbes: Love of the Past

1 Most teachers are passionate about helping students. Most doctors are passionate about helping people who are hurt or sick. Artists may be passionate about their art. Being passionate means having a strong feeling for or about someone or something. Many people search for their passion. When they find it, they often dedicate their lives to it. Esther Forbes was passionate about writing. She was passionate about history. She put those two together to become one of the most famous historical writers.
2 Esther Forbes was born on June 28, 1891. She was born in Massachusetts. She was the fifth of six children in her family. Her father taught math at a local college. He then opened a law office. Her mother was an expert on history. She was also a writer.
3 Growing up, Esther went to school. The boys in her family went to public school. The girls were among the first to go to the Bancroft School. The school was a prep school. Girls and boys were allowed to attend in the lower grades. Only girls attended in the upper grades. Esther did not do well in school. She had problems seeing and she was dyslexic. Dyslexia is a reading disorder. Many times letters are reversed making reading hard.
