Alaskan Maverick Sarah Palin

By Jody Williams
1     In 2008, Senator John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin ran for president and vice president of the United States. They represented the Republican Party. Maverick was a word that was heard during the campaign. What is a maverick? The dictionary says that a maverick is "someone who takes an independent stand." Governor Palin described herself as just that.

2     Sarah Heath Palin was born on February 11, 1964. She was born in Idaho. She is the third of four children. The Heath family moved to Alaska when Sarah was a baby. Her mother was a school secretary. Her father was a teacher and a track coach. Growing up, Sarah became interested in running. The whole family did. They would often run 5k and 10k races together. When Sarah was in high school, she was a member of the cross country team. Today, running is still a part of her life. She runs marathons.

3     Sarah went to high school in a small town in Alaska. While there, she was involved in many groups. She was on the girl's basketball team. In 1982, her team won the Alaska state championship. That same year Sarah graduated. She went to college. She first attended a college in Hawaii for one semester. She then went to college in Idaho. Sarah attended several colleges before graduating from the University of Idaho in 1987. Also during her college years Sarah won the Miss Wasilla Pageant. From there she finished third in the Miss Alaska Pageant.
