The Independence of Charlene and Cathy
By Beth Beutler
1 "I am really getting tired of this," Charlene muttered to herself. "This friendship is becoming very one-sided."
2 Charlene was in the middle of yet another project, helping her friend Cathy. Once again, Cathy had procrastinated about getting ready for the summer class the girls were teaching at the local childhood development center. Both of them were doing this volunteer work as part of a project required for a class at school in the fall.
3 Charlene, the planner of the two, had been thinking and working on ideas since school let out at the end of May. Cathy had been busy traveling, visiting friends, and going to social events. In the meantime, Charlene had written out lesson plans and begun to shop for materials they would need for the crafts they would be sharing with the children. She had also been practicing making sample crafts.
4 A few days ago, Cathy had come over to Charlene's house and asked, "So, what do you have planned for our project?"
5 Charlene had stared at Cathy for what felt like a full minute or more. "What do I have planned?" she shrieked. "What do YOU have planned?"
