Friendship Conflict

By Beth Beutler
"I don't know what to think," Carissa said sadly to her best friend, Katie. "Darlene just won't talk to me. She walks by me like I'm invisible."

Katie put her hand on her friend's shoulder. "I'm so sorry. I know what good friends you've been for years."

"That's what makes this so hard," Carissa said. "We were like sisters."

"I know," Katie said. She didn't express the thought that she had often felt a twinge of jealousy seeing how close Carissa and Darlene were. She was tempted to be a little glad that Darlene was mad at Carissa since that had made Carissa turn to Katie. But Katie tried to have a sense of good will toward everyone as much as possible. So she fought those feelings and tried to help her friend instead.

"Can you think of anything you might have said recently that would have upset Darlene?"

Carissa stayed silent, seeming to pull out memories of their most recent conversations.

"The last time we talked, Darlene was complaining about her school project taking so much time. It was ironic, since she already had it mostly done, and I hadn't even started mine."

"Did you tease her about it maybe?" Katie said.
