Denton arrived home from school, hungry as usual. The first thing he usually did after hopping off the bus was to drop his backpack in the mud room, take off his shoes, and get a snack. Many times, Mom was in the kitchen beginning supper, and today was no different.
"What are you making, Mom?" Denton asked as he poured himself a cup of milk and then sat down at the kitchen table.
"Bouillabaisse," his mom said simply.
"Boo ya what?" Denton said.
Mom smiled as she looked at her cookbook. "Just a second," she said, occupied with measuring out a small amount of saffron. "Let me finish this one part."
Denton turned to the plate of crackers and cheese Mom had put out as a snack. Mom was taking a cooking course, so he never knew what she was going to serve for supper nowadays.
"Okay, there," Mom said, wiping her hands on her apron. She joined Denton at the table.
"Bouillabaisse is basically a fish stew," she explained. "It contains three different types of fish and several different herbs and spices."
Denton wrinkled his nose. He wasn't much of a fish eater, except for fish sticks.
