They Are Not Strange!

By Beth Beutler
Sheila frowned at her friend Wendy, who was unpacking her book bag for the day at her locker. "What?" Wendy said, looking up and wondering at her friend's strange look.

"Did you just say what I thought you said?" Sheila asked.

     "Say what?" Wendy said.

"Did you just say Canadians are strange?"

Wendy rewound the conversation in her mind. She and Sheila had been talking about some new kids in school. One girl, Jeannie, had moved to America from Canada. Wendy had commented that the girl was odd and that all Canadians must be strange.

"Yes, so what?" Wendy said, rather defensively.

"It was a generalized comment, and I don't think it's fair."

Wendy grimaced. "I didn't mean anything by it."

"Then why did you say it?" Sheila asked, shifting her backpack from one arm to the other.
