2 In part 1 of this story, you read about Edward Jenner's ideas about cowpox and smallpox being the same disease. Dr. Jenner inoculated James Phipps with cowpox. Here's what happened next:
3 In May 1796, James Phipps became sick with a mild form of cowpox. Dr. Jenner watched the boy recover from his illness, and he waited. He thought about what to do. He knew that if he was right, he could save countless people from the serious disease of smallpox. He knew that what he was about to do was dangerous, but he had to try.
