Babe Didrikson Zaharias
By Jane Runyon
1 In the first half of the twentieth century, girls were expected to be ladylike. A girl who participated in athletics was not treated with very much respect. Babe Didrikson Zaharias changed that idea almost all by herself.
2 Mildred Ella Didrikson was born on June 26, 1911, in Port Arthur, Texas. She showed her amazing athletic ability at an early age. When she played baseball as a small girl, her hitting ability earned her the nickname Babe. Her friends thought she was as great a hitter as the famous Babe Ruth.
3 Babe played basketball in high school. When she was eighteen, she took a job playing for a semi-professional team in Dallas. Her team became national champions. She also led an AAU track and field team. She entered ten events in the AAU track and field championship in 1932. Babe took first place in five of the ten events. She received medals in two more events.
