Chris Van Allsburg

By Sharon Fabian
1     Go to Chris Van Allsburg's website. Chris Van Allsburg's website, like his books, is a place all its own, a land of fantasy and imagination. There are games, excerpts from his books, contests, and a biography, but what makes this website special is the artwork. Each picture has a little bit of mystery.

2     The mysterious pictures have also attracted many readers to his books. Chris Van Allsburg is both the author and the illustrator of his almost two dozen books, but you can tell that art is what he really loves as soon as you begin to turn the pages.

3     The little white dog, Fritz, in The Garden of Abdul Gasazi, is a bit of a mystery in Van Allsburg's paintings. Why does Fritz, or at least part of him, appear in every book? Where will he appear next? In The Polar Express, he appears as a hand puppet on the bedpost in the first picture.
