Light My Way
By Jody Williams
1 When our class left the room, we turned off the light. When the class came back, someone flipped the switch. The lights came on. Turning lights off and on is something we do several times a day. It is something we do not think about. We just do it. Did you ever think what life would be like without electric lights?
2 Many people think that Thomas Edison made the light bulb. He did, but he was not the first. The first electric light was invented in 1800. Humphry Davy was a scientist. He lived in England. He invented an electric battery. He connected wires to the battery. He connected the wires to a piece of platinum. The platinum glowed. The light was not very bright. The light did not last long.
3 In 1860, Sir Joseph Wilson Swan wanted to make a light that lasted a long time. He used carbon. His carbon piece lasted a little bit longer. In 1878, he demonstrated an electric lamp that he had made to a group of scientists.
