55 Saves Lives

By Jody Williams
1     Cars go fast. Cars go slow. How fast is too fast? How slow is too slow? There are laws that say how fast drivers can go. Most states say 65 miles per hour. Some states say 70 mph. A few have no speed limit at all on some roads.

2     On November 25, 1973, the government made a speed limit law. It said that the top speed limit everywhere must be 55 miles per hour. President Richard Nixon and Congress made the law.

3     In 1973, there was an oil crisis. A crisis is a time of trouble. Cars were using a lot of gas. When drivers drove fast, the cars used more gas. The 55 mph speed limit made cars slow down. The government hoped that would save gas. In the end, it did not save that much.
