One, Two, Three...

By Jody Williams
1     One day, the teacher told her class they were going to count. The first thing they counted was trees. Then, they counted flowers. Then the teacher said they were going to count birds. They wondered how they would do that. Birds fly. Birds hop. Birds do not stay in one spot very long.

2     Each year, around December 23rd, people count birds. They form groups throughout North America. About 50,000 people participate each year. It has become a holiday tradition. A tradition is something that is done year after year.

3     The groups report their findings. The information is sent to the Audubon Society. They work to protect nature. They protect animals. They work to keep nature safe and beautiful.
