Marika's New Puppy

By Phyllis Naegeli
"Let's go!" said Marika. "We don't want to be late."

"I'm coming," said Mom as she rushed down the stairs into the kitchen. "You sure are excited!"

"I can't wait to get Zack home," Marika said. "He's going to be my best friend."

Mom grabbed her car keys and purse from the counter. "I'm ready."

Marika ran to the car and jumped inside. Mom got in the driver's side, and they were off to the kennel.

"I can't believe we're getting a puppy," Marika said as they drove along. "It's going to be so much fun. He'll go everywhere with me. He can sleep on my bed. We can play outside. I'll teach him to sit and stay and come and roll over. Oh, I can't wait to get started."

"He is going to need to be trained," said Mom. "It's going to be a lot of work before he will be able to do all those things. Right now, he's just a puppy. He's going to sleep quite a bit during the day and at night for the next few months."

Marika looked concerned. "You mean I won't be able to play with him?"

Mom smiled. "Oh, you'll be able to play with him. He needs to spend time with you when he is awake. He'll be full of energy when he's not sleeping."

     "Oh, good!" said Marika.

"Here we are," said Mom as they drove into the kennel parking lot. As Mom pulled into a parking space and stopped, Marika jumped out and ran to the entrance. "Come on, Mom!"

Mom shook her head. "I'm coming," she said as she got out of the car, shut the door, and locked it with the remote. She met Marika at the entrance just as the owner, Paul, opened the door.

"Hi," said Paul as Mom and Marika walked into the office. "Zack is all ready to go. He should be here in just a minute; one of the kennel helpers is getting him. I have all of his paperwork here on the desk." Paul walked over to the desk, picked up a blue folder, and handed it to Marika's mom.
