Marika's New Puppy

Best Friend Day

Reading Comprehension for August 15

"Let's go!" said Marika. "We don't want to be late."

"I'm coming," said Mom as she rushed down the stairs into the kitchen. "You sure are excited!"

"I can't wait to get Zack home," Marika said. "He's going to be my best friend."

Mom grabbed her car keys and purse from the counter. "I'm ready."

Marika ran to the car and jumped inside. Mom got in the driver's side, and they were off to the kennel.

"I can't believe we're getting a puppy," Marika said as they drove along. "It's going to be so much fun. He'll go everywhere with me. He can sleep on my bed. We can play outside. I'll teach him to sit and stay and come and roll over. Oh, I can't wait to get started."

"He is going to need to be trained," said Mom. "It's going to be a lot of work before he will be able to do all those things. Right now, he's just a puppy. He's going to sleep quite a bit during the day and at night for the next few months."

Marika looked concerned. "You mean I won't be able to play with him?"

Mom smiled. "Oh, you'll be able to play with him. He needs to spend time with you when he is awake. He'll be full of energy when he's not sleeping."
