Who's Doing the Driving?

By Shannon Jackson
"Did you hear? The Greer Grade has been closed. There is no way up to our town!" Jeremy could barely contain his anxiety. The news that their rural town in the mountains of Idaho had been left isolated because of a rock slide on the main highway was exciting.

"Wow!" answered Jenna. "How did you find that out?"

"Someone called my mom this morning. They told her the road is closed."

"I wonder how long it will take before they get the road fixed. Have you ever heard of the road being closed?" Jenna asked.

"My mom said she only remembers one other time. That was back when the flooding was so bad and the mudslides closed the road."

"Oh, yeah! I remember my parents talking about that. They said that the road was closed for a couple of weeks, and the trucks couldn't come up to the grocery store. The mail couldn't be delivered," said Jenna. "It's so easy to take for granted that the store will have food when we go to get groceries."

"I know. You never think about the fact that those groceries were delivered by truck drivers. They travel our dangerous roads every week delivering goods for us to purchase."

"Back in the day, things were all delivered by train. Can you imagine how long that would take? Last year in class we read about all the train tracks being built in the early 1900s. Now everything is delivered so much more efficiently by trucks."
