A Smart Idea
By Mary Lynn Bushong
"I could use your help today, Beth," said Grandma as she filled a small bucket with clear water at the kitchen sink.
"Okay, Grandma," said Beth as she put her pad and paper down on the kitchen table and went to get her shoes from the mat by the kitchen door. "I was making a list of things to tell Mom and Dad about when they call later today. I hope they are having a good trip."
"I think you have a very smart idea there," said Grandma as she sat the bucket on the floor. "If you could bring this bucket, I'll bring the tools."
Beth followed Grandma out to the herb garden. The variety of plants, flowers, and scents amazed her.
"What is this plant, Grandma?" asked Beth as she pointed to some tubular, green leaves.
"Rub your fingers on the leaves and tell me what you smell," said Grandma.
Beth obeyed and lifted her fingers to her nose.
"Oh, that smells a little like an onion."
Grandma smiled. "That is garlic. Many of the plants here are good for both food and medicine. Look over there at those low plants with the yellow flowers. Do you recognize them?"
