Justice for Cammie

By Mary L. Bushong
1     Cammie's mom carefully parked the large, modified van in the extra-wide parking space. Then she flipped the switch that opened the side door. Cammie moved her power wheelchair onto the lift and made sure she left enough room for her service dog, Justice.

2     "Are you sure you want to go by yourself?" asked Mom from the driver's seat.

3     Cammie nodded. "Justice will take care of me, won't you, girl?" She looked down at the red dog next to her and stroked her soft, short fur with her scarred, misshapen hand. Cammie stared at the skin for a moment before looking away. Maybe someday she would get used to the scars that covered not only her hands but much of her body. The dog rested her head on Cammie's lap. Justice didn't care about how the girl looked, so long as they could be together.

4     The small red Doberman trotted next to the girl as they went into the store. The assistant manager started toward them but stopped. The special harness Justice wore identified her as a service dog. He knew the law allowed her to go everywhere with Cammie. He stood and smiled as they moved past him.

5     Justice was careful to stay close by Cammie as she rolled up and down the aisles. Several people watched them go by. The girl wondered who they were staring at, her or the dog. She tried to ignore them as well as Justice did, but she thought she could feel their eyes until she turned a corner. This outing was harder than she had thought it would be. Then she looked over at the happy face of her dog and was encouraged.
