The Brownie Baking Contest
By Phyllis Naegeli
Jessica fumbled through the cabinets in the kitchen mumbling, "Where is it, where is it?"
Her sister, Janice, called to her from the doorway. "What are you looking for?"
"Mom's brownie recipe!" Jessica snapped.
"Excuse me, I was just trying to help," Janice replied, scowling at her sister.
"I'm sorry; I just can't find it anywhere," Jessica said, as she plopped down at the kitchen table, pouting.
"Why do you need it?" Janice asked.
"Tomorrow is National Brownie Day," said Jessica. "My class is having a baking contest to see who can bake the best brownies. I know Mom's recipe would win."
"Have you asked her where it is?" Janice suggested.
"No, I thought I knew where it was. I guess that's the next thing to do," Jessica said, getting up to find her mom. Calling for her, Jessica found her in the office.
"Hi, Mom," Jessica began. "Do you know where your brownie recipe is?"
"Isn't it in the cupboard over the sink?" asked Mom.
"No, I looked there," Jessica replied. "I couldn't find it."
"Well, let's go look. Why do you need it?" Mom asked, as they headed for the kitchen.
"I need to make brownies for a baking contest at school tomorrow," she replied.
