Busting the Blahs!

By Beth Beutler
Maddie sighed. "I wish spring would come," she thought as she wandered aimlessly around the house. She was home for a three-day winter break, but many of her friends had gone away. She plopped onto the stool by the breakfast bar and sighed again.

"What's the matter?" her mom asked.

"I'm bored. I miss my friends. I feel blah."

     Her mom smiled. "I understand."

"You do?" Maddie asked, surprised that her mom, who was usually so cheerful, could ever feel the blahs.

"Yes. I get the blahs a lot in the winter. I don't like being cold, and the days are shorter because it gets darker sooner."

Maddie's mom tried to explain this to her without getting frustrated. She'd talked to Maddie about it already a few days ago. However, she also felt disappointed about missing the trip. She liked Disney World almost as much as her kids!

"I know, Mom. You are right. I guess I need to find something to do."

     "I have an idea."

     "What's that?"

"A surefire way to get rid of the blahs is to stop thinking about yourself. I just read that February is Blah Buster Month. I bet if we do something for someone else, we won't feel down for long!"

So Maddie and her mother began to brainstorm ways they could help other people. They came up with several ideas, like:
