The Wedding of the Century
By Brenda B. Covert
1 The media called it "the wedding of the century." In the eyes of the world, the couple had experienced a fairy tale romance. The bride's engagement ring was an 18-carat sapphire (trust me, that's big!) surrounded by diamonds. Now they were having what some called "a glittering storybook wedding." It was a fairy tale come to life in the 20th century!
2 It was July 29, 1981 - a Wednesday. The weather was just what the wedding couple ordered! The lovely but shy bride and her royal groom welcomed 3,500 invited guests into a London cathedral. Another 600,000 people crowded along the route from the palace to the cathedral, hoping for a glimpse of the wedding couple. TV cameras were present. They showed the wedding in 74 countries. They made it possible for 750 million people all over the world to see the happy ending to the fairy tale - just like Cinderella and Prince Charming.
3 The 20-year-old bride wore a silk taffeta dress with a heavy, 25 foot train. Her veil was held in place by a real diamond tiara. Her huge, white bouquet reached from her abdomen to her knees! The 32-year-old groom with the long face looked important in his Royal Navy dress uniform. Photos of the wedding couple were emblazoned on everything from pillows to plates! Collectors went crazy!
