"I'm bored," Alisha whispered with a sigh.
"Me, too," answered her friend Shelby.
"There's nothing to do! I hate these quiet times!" Kyle added.
Alisha, Shelby, and Kyle sat cross-legged on the floor, leaning against the cool concrete wall of their summer day camp classroom. It was quiet time. Every day, the camp teacher, Mrs. Summer, made them sit quietly for 90 minutes, listening to classical music, reading, and dozing on a mat if they felt like it. The three friends thought it was a waste of time, and they were bored nearly every afternoon.
Mrs. Summer looked up from her desk and noticed the three whispering children. She sighed also. "I wish those kids would learn to enjoy quiet time," she thought. She began to think about providing a remedy for their boredom when the camp director tapped on the door.
Mrs. Summer quietly slipped out into the hallway. "Yes, Ms. Whitacre?"
"Mrs. Summer, we are in need of some help. One of our custodians fell and broke his leg, so he will be off work for a few weeks. We cannot afford to hire a replacement while continuing to pay his salary, so there will be some things that cannot be done as quickly as they used to be."
"Like what, for example? Can we help?" asked Mrs. Summer.
