Sometimes there is a short verse of praise or a tribute in gratitude to the memory of that person. A short poem or statement celebrating the life of a person engraved on a headstone is called an epitaph [EHP-uh-taff].

2     The word ï申epitaphï申 comes from the Greek language. The Greek word taphos meant ï申tomb,ï申 and the prefix epi meant ï申over.ï申 An epitaph can tell the world what was important about a person who once lived.
