A New Tradition
By Brenda B. Covert
1 While his family was spending the weekend in Canada, Devon picked up a copy of Adbusters magazine, a Canadian publication started by Kalle Lasn. He had been born in Estonia but had become a citizen of Canada. Devon neither knew nor cared about that; his interest in the magazine was the title and the weird graphic on the cover.
2 Flipping through the pages, Devon discovered that it was a magazine with no ads. It existed through subscriptions only. He also learned that it was full of philosophical and activist-type articles that held no interest for the teen. The only thing that really caught his eye was the mention of a holiday that Devon had never before heard of.
3 "Hey, Dad!" His father turned from the newspaper headlines to see what Devon wanted. "Have you ever heard of ‘Buy Nothing Day'?"
4 Mr. Mills shrugged and shook his head.
5 "In America it's the day after Thanksgiving," Devon said helpfully. "It was started in the 1990s."
