Roald Dahl

By Sharon Fabian
1     The movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that came out in 2005 is about a poor kid named Charlie who wins a tour through a magical candy factory by finding a golden ticket in the wrapper of a chocolate bar.

2     There was an earlier movie of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory made in 1971. It was based on the book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, published in 1964, by Roald Dahl.

3     Roald Dahl was born in 1916 in the country of Wales. As a child he attended a prep school in England. Discipline was strict there, to say the least. Students had to be neat at all times - no messiness allowed. They always had to walk - no running allowed. And they had to obey rules, rules, rules.

4     Once, Roald was beaten with a cane for misbehaving. His mother found out about it and took him out of that school.

5     The mean teachers must have inspired some of his characters in his books. Many of his adult characters are downright mean. He portrays them as selfish and cruel. Often, his main character, usually a young adolescent, has to face problems caused by the adults in his or her life.
