Alita Becomes a Citizen
By Phyllis Naegeli
Caroline rushed into the house calling, "Mom!"
Her mother came into the living room. "What's all the excitement?"
"My friend, Alita, is going to be a citizen tomorrow!" cried Caroline.
"That's wonderful. Who's Alita?"
"She's a new girl at school. Her family just moved here a few weeks ago."
"From where?" asked Mom.
"From Chicago," said Caroline. "But she's really from Mexico. Her family has lived in America for eight years," said Caroline. Then she paused thoughtfully. "When are we going to become citizens?" she asked.
Mom giggled. "We are citizens."
"When did that happen?" asked Caroline, surprised.
"When you were born," said Mom.
Caroline frowned. "That's no fun!"
"Why do you say that?"
"Well, Alita gets to go to a special ceremony. Her whole family is going to be there. It would be fun to have a special day to become a citizen!"
