It's Time for Immunizations
By Phyllis Naegeli
The tall woman in a long white coat entered the examination room. "Good morning," said Dr. Cora, reaching her hand out to the woman sitting in the corner chair.
Mrs. Arroyo rose and shook the doctor's hand. "It's nice to see you."
Dr. Cora smiled at Mrs. Arroyo in return. Then she greeted the young boy who was sitting on the examination table. "Good morning, Emilio."
Emilio's dark eyes were squinted in dismay. "I don't want to get a bunch of shots," he cried out.
Dr. Cora put her hand on Emilio's shoulder. "I know you don't like shots. But, they are very important. You need certain immunizations to protect you from getting sick."
"But they hurt!" said Emilio shaking his head full of curly black hair in frustration. "I think I'd rather just get sick."
Mrs. Arroyo picked up her son's chin and looked him in the eye. "I don't think you mean that. Many children die because they don't have immunizations. We are very fortunate that these are available."
Emilio sighed deeply. "I guess I don't have a choice."
Dr. Cora looked over Emilio's chart. "It looks like you only need one vaccination today. The rest of your shots are up to date."
