Labor Day Blues

By Brenda B. Covert
Dylan and Brittany Trask drooped as they watched their father leave for work.

"It's a holiday," Brittany whined. "We're supposed to spend the day having fun together."

"Dad always works on holidays," Dylan groused. "It's not fair."

"What are you children complaining about?" their grandmother asked, wiping her hands on her apron as she walked into the room.

Brittany turned and frowned. "Dad never stays home on holidays. All he ever does is work."

"You know that's not true," Grandma retorted smartly. "Your father never works on Thanksgiving or Christmas."

"Only because the car lot is closed," Dylan said, thrusting out his lower lip.

Grandma sighed and patted the children's shoulders. "Car salesmen can't sell cars unless they work at times when people want to shop. Days like today can bring buyers to the dealership in droves. It doesn't mean that your father chooses work over family."
