Summer in the Country
By Mary Lynn Bushong

1
The day starts in the cool darkness
Before the dawning sun.
The farmer rises from his slumber
To embrace his world.

2
Cattle low in the pastures and
At the gate to the milking parlor.
Frothy milk disappears through
Pipes into hidden holding tanks.

3
Animals are watered and fed.
Hogs smack their lips.
Hens cackle over their eggs
While roosters greet the day with crowing.
