Desert Storm
By Jane Runyon

1     The countries that make up the Middle East have been unsettled for thousands of years. The people of these countries are often at war with each other. Fighting has become a way of life with many of the citizens.

2     The United Nations was drawn into one such problem area in 1991. It is no secret that the United States is very protective of Saudi Arabia and its neighbors. Saudi Arabia is an oil rich country in the Middle East. Countries around the world depend on the oil from this area. It is used as fuel for transportation. It is used for heating. Oil has many uses for the people of the world.

3     On August 2, 1990, the leader of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, ordered his army to invade the country of Kuwait and take control of its government. Kuwait is a neighbor of Saudi Arabia. Many countries of the world, including the United States, were worried about this invasion. If Hussein's troops could set themselves up in Kuwait, what would keep them from invading Saudi Arabia? If they could control Saudi Arabia, they would control the supply of oil to the world. Most countries in the world did not want to see this happen. Hussein was not a leader that other leaders wanted to work with. He would become too powerful to control if he held Kuwait or Saudi Arabia.
