What Is a Prosthesis?

1     The fictional character Captain Hook had a shiny hook in place of one hand. Artificial limbs today are better than that. An artificial hand is called a prosthesis. One definition of prosthesis is "an artificial device used to replace a missing body part." Many people think of artificial limbs when they hear this term. However, a prosthesis may replace many body parts - for instance, there are artificial valves for the heart. Some people may have prosthetic eyes. And there are many more kinds of devices available to replace a missing or ineffective body part. Biomedical engineers develop these devices. These scientists understand anatomy and know about medicine. They also know about engineering. If Captain Hook needed to replace his hand today .....
