The Ant and the Chrysalis
By Brenda B. Covert

1     A chrysalis dangled from a bush like a misshapen ornament. It was neither round nor smooth. It had been waiting patiently inside its shell. Change was coming. Until then, the chrysalis would be still and wait.

2     An ant saw the strange thing hanging in the bush. When the chrysalis wiggled slightly, the ant understood that it was a living creature.

3     "Oh, you poor thing!" the ant exclaimed with false pity. "You are ugly, and you're stuck in one place like a prisoner in a jail cell. Meanwhile, I run freely across the ground and climb up the tallest trees. I have complete freedom, but you are trapped in your shell, barely able to move. That's too bad for you!"

4     The chrysalis heard the ant. It could have said something, but it chose to keep quiet. Then the ant grew bored and scurried off to find food. The chrysalis was left in peace.

5     In a few days, the ant passed by the bush again. Looking up, the ant saw the chrysalis. All that was left was the shell.
