1     Countries have had armies to defend them for thousands of years. Navies, too, have been in use for a very long time. Air forces, though, are less than one hundred years old.
 
2     The first air forces came into being just before the start of World War I. The first airplane flight had been accomplished by the Wright brothers only a few years before in 1903. By the end of World War I, thousands of planes made up the air forces of the world. World War I boosted the development of aircraft.
 
3     In World War II, air forces played a major role during the war. Japan's air force bombed U.S. ships at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in December .....
