1     Ants are insects. They are invertebrate animals. Invertebrates are animals that have a hard outer shell called an exoskeleton. They do not have backbones. Ants live together in a group called a colony. The queen is the leader of the colony. The queen's job is to lay eggs. Small worm-like larvae hatch from each egg. Each larva is fed by worker ants. The larva's only job is to eat and grow. As it grows bigger, it molts. It sheds its old, too-small body covering. The larva molts many times as it grows. When the .....
