Letter from a Wigmaker's Apprentice
By Brenda B. Covert

1     My beloved cousin Benjamin,

2     You may wonder whether I have by now been apprenticed, as I certainly wonder the same of you. The answer is yes. I am now a wigmaker's apprentice. My master's business is in Williamsburg and is very successful. He continues to teach me more about this craft and encourages me to believe that someday I could make a living with a shop of my own. He has told my father that I appear to have the knack. Time will tell.

3     I did not think it possible to find delight in such a trade. However, my feelings have changed with the passage of time. The longer I work here, the more interesting the work becomes to me. Father would perhaps attribute my attitude to maturity, and maybe that is so.
