1     Do your best. These three words played a big part in Robert Kraus's life. It all began with a contest. It was a cartoon contest. Robert Kraus won the contest when he was just a kid! His prize was a small plaque. It read, "Do Your Best." He kept it all of his life.

2     Just a few years later, Robert Kraus got his first job. He was still in middle school. He worked for a newspaper. He didn't deliver newspapers. He drew cartoons! He drew a new one every week. Robert Kraus loved drawing. He drew more cartoons in his free time. He sold some of them to magazines.

3     Robert Kraus's career took off like a rocket! His cartoons were in famous magazines by the time that he was sixteen years old. Later, he went to art school. After that he got a job as an artist for The New Yorker magazine. After a few years, he added another job. He started making children's books. He made all of the drawings. He wrote the stories, too.
