Geladas
By Sheri Skelton

1     If you want to see a gelada monkey living in the wild, you'd have to go to Ethiopia. Geladas live high in the mountains there. They like steep, rocky areas. Geladas stay on the ground most of the time. They spend more time on the ground than any other primate except humans. At night they sleep snuggled up to each other on rocky ledges. This keeps them safe from predators.

2     Geladas are omnivores. They eat both plants and meat. They mainly eat grass, roots, and leaves. Sometimes they eat insects. Geladas are the only grazing primates. They don't have to travel far to find food. They spend their days sitting on the ground feasting on the grasses in the mountain meadows. Their plump rear ends make sitting on the ground quite comfortable.
