Goodbye, Pyramid; Hello, MyPlate!
By Cindy Grigg

1     I know that I should eat all kinds of healthy foods. I just was never sure how much of which foods I should choose. I've seen the Food Guide Pyramid. I've seen it, but I didn't really understand it. Now there's an easier way. There's a new symbol called MyPlate.

2     MyPlate can help me - and you, too - make good food choices. MyPlate shows a plate with four sections. One section holds vegetables. One section holds fruits. Together, fruits and vegetables should fill up half of my plate. Grains take up another section. The grain section is a little larger than the fruit and vegetable sections. The fourth section is for proteins. It's a little smaller than the other sections. A circle off to the right side of MyPlate is for dairy foods. Milk or calcium-rich foods should be part of each meal, too.

3     MyPlate can be used for all three meals. Sometimes I eat sliced tomatoes with scrambled eggs. I also like bean and cheese burritos for breakfast! If I don't eat vegetables at breakfast, then I can have some in my snacks. I can also add an extra one or two to my dinner. A side salad is an easy way to add veggies to a meal.
