Ship in the Mist, Part 2
By Mary Lynn Bushong

It was near the end of their holiday when the weather began to change from the long, clear, hot days to cooler ones. Dad commented on the change as they cooked supper on the barbecue. "I think we may get some mist rolling in tonight. It will probably burn off in the morning."

Brian's bedroom window faced the ocean. He liked to stare out at night and see the reflection of the moon on the water. That night he saw the mist hovering on the beach and over the rocks.

Neil was almost asleep when Brian rushed over and shook his shoulder. "Neil, Neil," said Brian with a loud whisper. "You have got to see this!"

Neil grumbled, got up, and looked out the window. "Look at what?" he asked.

"The mist over the rocks. It looks just like an old sailing ship!" said Brian.

"No, it doesn't," grumbled Neil. "It's just mist. Let me get back to sleep."

Brian was just a little bit discouraged by his brother's reaction. He knelt on his bed a little longer, staring down at the beach before he also felt the heavy hand of sleep upon him.

First thing in the morning, Neil and Andrea led Brian down to the beach. They were determined to show him that there had been no ship by the rocks. It was only a trick of the mist. Brian carried his metal detector and shovel just in case.

Near the ocean, the rocks were lower so it was easy to climb on the formation. Neil and Andrea climbed up first. Not all of the stone was in one piece. Some boulders and large rocks had been piled in place.
