A Bully at Work

Adrian loved to drive and had just gotten his license. Now he wanted his own car! Adrian was very excited when he got a part-time job at a restaurant called the Snack Shack, which was near his high school. Adrian almost didn't mind the silly red hat and the ridiculous red-and-white checkered half-apron he had to wear while he was bussing tables as long as he could make money to buy the green Subaru he had in mind. Adrian worked two hours a day for three days a week, and he liked this schedule because he could still keep up with his friends and his homework.

One day, Adrian was picking up dirty glasses from a table. A co-worker walked by the table while Adrian worked. Middle-aged Melvin, who was the shift supervisor, was known for being a little rough on employees from time to time. So far, Adrian had never been the object of Melvin's negativity, but today something set off Melvin's radar.

"What do you think you are doing by picking up those glasses first?" asked Melvin harshly. "You know I told you to always put the plates in your bin first and then come back for the glasses. Dirty plates look much worse than dirty glasses. Are you stupid or something?" asked Melvin in a menacing tone.

Adrian's faced burned red until it seemed to match his red hair. Adrian looked as though he was on fire from the neck up.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Burn," said Adrian as he quickly unloaded the glasses and picked up plates. He felt foolish, but he could not remember Melvin telling him to pick up plates first.
