National Cream-filled Donut Day

Reading Comprehension for September 14

What do you like for dessert? Do you love cold, sweet ice cream? How about a juicy slice of berry pie? Some people like a snack that they can carry around. Donuts are the perfect, portable treat!

No one knows who made the first donut. Some people think they came to America with Dutch settlers. The Dutch people loved sweets! They made the first cookies, cream pie, and cobblers in America. They made donuts, too.

A sailor named Hanson Gregory may have made the first donut with a hole in the center when he was 16 years old. The story goes that he wasn't happy with the raw center of most donuts. He claimed to have punched a hole in the center of dough with the ship's tin pepper box. People like the idea of a hole in the middle of their fried cakes. No more doughy centers!
