A Taste for Gold, Part 2

Arion was stunned by the magnitude of the request. How could he and an immature gryphon hope to provide adequate protection for all the king's treasure? Nemesis, on the other hand, had no doubts in their ability and readily agreed.

"We have asked the men of the temple to bring you fruit, Arion. We have told them only that you are visiting," added the female.

It seemed like only moments had passed before the two elder gryphons had disappeared with a quick flash of golden wings. Then Arion and Nemesis were alone.

"You know, Nemesis, I wish you had talked to me before agreeing so quickly," muttered Arion.

"You did not wish to help?" asked the surprised gryphon.

"It's not that. I just feel unprepared. I mean, what about my clothes and food? You just ate and won't need more for days. What do we do if someone breaks in?" asked Arion. "No one would be afraid of me."

"I can go to your home and get some things for you," answered Nemesis reasonably. "It will be like I am taking care of a pet," he grinned at Arion. He loved to tease Arion.

Arion agreed, and Nemesis soared through the sky toward home. While Nemesis was away, a man wearing temple garb brought a bowl of fruit for Arion. Arion spoke with him for just a few moments. Then, closing the door firmly, Arion threw the bolt into place once more.
