A Taste for Gold, Part 3

Arion rushed to the door he had only just bolted. He hoped to raise an alarm and get help from the temple. No sooner had he pushed the bolt back than the door was shoved toward him, knocking him off balance.

He was jerked upward by the man who had brought him the fruit, and a knife was put to his neck.

"I wouldn't move if I were you," the man growled in his ear. "The knife is sharp, and blood stains would not be attractive on that fine garment of yours."

The man turned to the others. "Work quickly. Use those sledgehammers to knock a hole in the outside wall of the gold room. Fill your bags and drop them through the hole. The others should be there to pick them up."

"How about silver coins and jewels?" asked one of the thieves as they hurried to the gold room.

"No," said the temple man. "Saruk's taxes are only in gold. I am not a thief. I take only what is due me."

The man pulled Arion toward the gold room. Another thief opened the door. He walked into the room where the king's gold was stored and was dragged to the ceiling wrapped in a net.

"Fool," the temple man muttered under his breath. He ordered the trapped man cut loose while two others began striking the wall with their hammers. After breaking through the wall, they filled the bags methodically and dropped them through the hole.

"What do we do with you?" asked the temple man. "I obviously can't leave you here; you've heard and seen too much. I know; we'll let you follow the gold."
