A Trip to the Emergency Room

National Eye Safety Day

Reading Comprehension for July 16

"Mom!" shrieked Jacob as he ran into the house with his hand covering his eye.

Mom came running into the front room. "What happened?" she asked with concern and anxiety.

Between sobs, Jacob did his best to explain. "I was using a hammer to smash rocks. Something flew up into my eye!"

"Oh, my," said Mom. "We'd better get you to the emergency room. Come on."

Mom grabbed her purse and car keys off the kitchen counter. They headed quickly to the car and drove to the hospital in town.

As they entered the emergency services department, a nurse met them. "How can we help you?"

"My son was smashing rocks with a hammer and something got into his eye," said Mom.

"O.K. Let's go right over here and get you checked in so you can see the doctor," said the nurse.

They sat at a desk and answered a few questions. Then the nurse told them to have a seat while she found a room for them. A few minutes later, they were led to an examination room. Before long, a doctor came in to check on Jacob.

"Hi, I'm Dr. Langley. What happened?"
